NHBRC Registration Process & Why It Matters for Builders
The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) regulates home-building standards in South Africa, ensuring builders meet legal and technical requirements. NHBRC registration is mandatory for residential contractors, protecting homeowners from poor construction and ensuring industry compliance. This guide explains what NHBRC is, why registration is required, the step-by-step process, costs involved, and how Design4Africa helps simplify it.
Design4Africa specializes in custom facilitation services, assisting businesses in industry-specific registrations and compliance approvals. In addition to NHBRC registration, we offer facilitation for CIPC company registrations, B-BBEE certification, trademark registration, domain registration, and CIDB contractor approvals.
Our role in NHBRC registration is to provide structured guidance, ensuring clients meet all necessary requirements and correctly prepare their documents before submission. Unlike CIPC registration, where we handle the application process directly, NHBRC registration requires the builder to submit their own application, while we assist throughout the preparation phase.
Complete List of Requirements for NHBRC Registration
Before submitting an NHBRC application, builders must gather the following:
- Registered Business Entity (Private Company or Other Business Structure)
- Valid Tax Clearance Certificate from SARS
- Proof of Financial Capability
- Builders’ Manual Purchase (SANS 10400)
- Technical Competency Assessment
- Workshop Attendance (Separate from Technical Assessment)
- Beneficial Ownership Filing (If Applicable)
- Company Registration Number (Issued by CIPC)
- Business Bank Account Details
- Signed Industry Compliance Declarations
If clients do not have any of these requirements, Design4Africa offers facilitation services for select steps at additional costs, ensuring clients are fully prepared before submission.

What Our Facilitation Service Does Not Cover
While we provide guidance and structured support, certain tasks remain the client’s responsibility:
- Clients submit the application themselves, but we are available throughout the process for troubleshooting and assistance.
- We provide preparation guidance, but clients must attend workshops and assessments independently.
- We do not register tax clearance or business bank accounts—clients must arrange this separately.
- Final approval decisions rest with NHBRC, but we ensure clients are fully prepared for submission.
- Clients pay NHBRC directly—our facilitation fee is separate from NHBRC’s official costs.
